Are you really trying to tell me there is a major difference between common essential oil and organic essential oil? This is a great question to ask so let’s get to it shall we? Aromatherapy buffs are no stranger to certified organic herbal oil. Organic oil is just that its organic it’s not made in a science lab like a lot of the commercial herbal oils you will find. Essentials does not have the harsh chemical you may find in the counterpart. Think Of what we are doing with these oils? We are breathing them and putting them on our skin do you really want to have something made with chemicals from a laboratory going onto and into you? I thought not…
In addition because of the focus on the green movement I would like to point out that Organic essential oils are great for the environment. Although herbal oils are natural it is crucial to use them in a diluted form before you apply them. If you are doing an aromatherapy massage then you really want to make sure that it is diluted with what the industry refers to as carrier oils, organic essential oils should be mixed with either canola, or olive oil to reduce for an Aromatherapy massage. If you are using organic essential oil in your bath then you really do not need to worry as much just simply put anywhere between ten to twenty drops of you concentrated oil into your bath and you are ready to go. Aromatherapy is really an old science older than most and in order to use it correctly my personal belief is that you need to apply the elements closest to nature. That really is essence of aromatherapy and by using synthetic herbal oils I believe you are taking away the art from the science if that makes sense.
Ordinarily experts in the field of aromatherapy would agree that putting any herbal oil on the skin by itself is a bad idea it does not matter if it is organic or synthetic herbal oil it’s a bad idea the human skin is just not ready to absorb something like that and if this is true I would still want my skin to have pure organic essential oil even in the diluted form compared to chemical. It is easy to overdo the amount of organic essential oil that you use so always mix the oils away from Nevertheless you will be applying it. It’s important when you are shopping for organic oil that you understand you get what you pay for. Most cheap herbal oil is synthetic because of the time that is saved. Even So when you purchase organic essential oil you know that although it is costing a bit more it is going to be worth it due to the benefit. Organic oil is the best!

Organic Essential Oil – Yes Or No?

Dietary Supplements Are Necessary
01.30
Do You Need to Take Supplements?
Your diet is the source of the nutrients needed by our body, right?
Well…for many reasons, this does not actually happen like it used to. Hence, we need to take dietary supplements to make up for these nutrient deficiencies. If we did not do so, we might face undesirable consequences like anemia, chronic fatigue, poor immunity and so on. Even just a deficiency in vitamin C alone, will bring on scurvy, a nasty health condition that all of the sailors used to get.
Put simply, dietary supplements are products that provide nutrients like vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and so forth. Ideally, by making a careful choice of the kind of foods you eat, you would have the right intake of your daily requirement of nutrients. But, this rarely happens. Hectic lifestyles that prevent healthy eating habits and availability of easy convenience foods force many to ignore the harmful effects of what is on their plate.
Dietary supplements are necessary to fight off the adverse consequences of improper food habits and age-related disorders. Most of the modern day diseases like diabetes, hypertension, chronic fatigue and anemia are lifestyle-related. As we cannot turn the clock back to the old era, we must therefore rely on dietary supplements as the manna for the new age.
Dietary supplements are essential for most people. Here are a few situations in which they play a vital role in giving positive health benefits:
If you are a chronic poor eater and you do not get enough vitamins and minerals from your regular diet. You need to have three to four servings of fresh vegetables and fruits every day. If loading up on salad is not your idea of a great meal, then you need dietary supplements to give you what you miss out. If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, dietary supplements ensure that the developing fetus gets appropriate daily requirement of essential nutrients. For example, iron and folate deficiency could cause neural tube defects or poor mental development in the baby. Vitamin C deficiency leads to poor development of gums and Vitamin D deficiency causes impaired development of bones. If you have other pregnancy-related disorders like pica, reduced appetite, nausea etc., you would most probably be not eating right. Therefore, dietary supplements make up for what is lacking in your diet so that your baby is healthy. If you are a woman over the age of 45, you are more likely to suffer the effects of menopause. Menopause brings change in the hormone levels and consequently thinning of the bones. Osteoporosis leads to fractures unless women take calcium supplements regularly. If you suffer from diseases that interfere with normal absorption of nutrients from the diet, as is often the case in old age, supplements provide the additional quantity required in order to make up for reduced uptake. If you are convalescing after surgery or major illness and you have not started on your regular diet as yet, dietary supplements help in speedy recovery by providing the recommended daily allowance. This is true especially for the B group vitamins.
Although there are many benefits of dietary supplements, there are a few precautions one must take. Make sure that you are using pharmaceutical-grade products that have been tested for efficiency in the body. Overdose of some vitamins may be harmful, or wasteful. Many products on the shelves today, do not contain what they say on the label.
There is a new class of nutrients, known as glyconutrients, that has recently been discovered. These are not vitamins or minerals. In fact, the science behind them and how the cells communicate, has resulted in four of the last eight nobel prizes. While glyconutrition helps the body to have healthy cells and an immune system boost and more energy, because it helps the cells to communicate properly.
Dolphins And Animal Assisted Therapy
01.27
Some scientists who work with dolphins believe that these sea-dwellers show a sense to the disability and physical trauma associated with function and pain in humans, therefore making the cranio-sacral therapy possible. Dolphins, with their internal sonar or echo-location can feel where the person hurts the most and are able to gently nudge and play without hurting the person.
Once, two dolphins saved a writer while he was swimming far off the coast of California. The man was a good swimmer and swimming had become his daily routine. One day, far away from the shore, he felt very tired, too tired to lift his arms or kick. Suddenly, two dolphins came to his rescue. They swam with their bodies touching him and they propelled him forward by fastening their nose under his arms to keep him afloat, until they came close to the shore where there were other people. By this time, the writer had regained enough strength to swim a few more yards to safety. He says the dolphins didn’t leave immediately. They kept leaping off shore to make sure he made it to land safely.
Many incidents of dolphins saving people at sea have been reported. Some time ago, it was in the news that a pod of dolphins defended a group of swimmers by circling protectively around them to fend off the attack of the great white shark. The swimmers were on a lifeguard training swim about hundred yards off the shore. At first, the men didn’t understand that there was a shark. One of them swam away but was pushed back into the circle by the dolphins. At that time he saw a nine-foot shark two yards away from him. The men spent about forty minutes before in that circle before the dolphins let them swim back to the shore. Since sharks are dolphins’ greatest enemies, it is possible that they protected the men as if the swimmers were their own offspring.
There are many different species of dolphins. A familiar one is Flipper’s kind, the bottlenose dolphin. One of the world’s most endangered species is a dolphin called by many names such as Beiji; Pai C’hi; Chinese River Dolphin; Yangtze Dolphin; Whitefin Dolphin; Whiteflag Dolphin. It inhabits the Yangtze River in China. It is said that these animals are very close to being extinct since there are only 5 of them left, whereas in 1984 there were 400.
Warm-blooded like men, dolphins are mammals, not fish, and they give birth to one baby at a time, nursing their young up to four years. They live in social groups called pods and interact with each other very closely. These pods’ make-up can change, since dolphins interact with dolphins from other pods from time to time. A lone dolphin that has lost his friends at sea can easily be adopted by another pod.
Dolphins have powerful tails that not only help to steer them in water, but also signal annoyance or danger. Just like humans, dolphins like to gesture when they interact with each other. To communicate, they use body language or they whistle and they stroke one another with their fins as if bonding socially. When they swim together as friends, they move synchronously leaping in and out of the water. When they are angry or aggressive, they open their mouths or clap their jaws violently.
Dolphins can dive to great depths and also can leap high over the water. Being mammals, they need to breathe, but unlike humans their breathing is voluntary. They breathe through the opening on the top of their heads. It is possible that dolphins can drown. When that happens other dolphins come to the drowning dolphin’s aid, supporting his body in such a way that his blowhole stays above the water.
To sleep, dolphins have to shut down only half of their brain, which probably means that they are always alert to danger. Dolphins also take short naps as they float just below the surface. Yet, unlike humans, their most active feeding time is the night, although they spend a good amount of the day looking for food.
One of the best dolphin research centers is located in the Marathon Key, Florida. Here and at other dolphin centers around the world, the project of aiding handicapped children with Dolphins is carefully investigated, with the therapy based on the dolphin’s natural desire to come into contact with humans. Through interaction with dolphins, children with Autism, Down’s Syndrome, anorexia, depression, cancer, and learning disabilities have exhibited positive results by calming down and showing a better sense of importance and self-confidence.
There are, however opposing views and theories. In 2003, a report by WDCS (Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society) and HSUS (the Humane Society of the United States) claims that the risk to dolphins overweighs the positive effects of their interaction with humans in dolphin-petting zoos. Dolphins become obese with the excess feeding by the public and extended exposure to humans subject the animals to stress and injury. Also some children, even if very few, have been reported to regress in their development from being pushed by their families and the fright of the animals or the water.
Given the positive use of dolphin and human contact, more research is needed, and attention to the dolphin petting areas and more closely observed rules of hygiene and sanitation are in order, so that both species can continue to benefit from each other.
How Are You Sitting – Do You Have a Problem with Your Posture?
01.24
Stand up straight or sit upright, hold your shoulders back. These are all commands that we were told to do as children so that we would have good posture. Yet we were seldom shown ways to accomplish this and nor do we really know what good posture actually is. The consequences of this problem can be seen all around us: stiff necks, shoulders hunched forward or pulled tightly back, restricted breathing, and tightness in the thighs, legs and ankles. Backaches, headaches, and other painful symptoms are often the unfortunate result.
Good posture is generally considered to be the natural and comfortable bearing of a health person. In the standing position this means the body is natural – but not rigid and straight. In the sitting it means the back is comfortably straight. How you stand, sit and move have a profound influence on how well your body functions. Good sitting and standing positions help to promote normal functioning of the body’s organs and increases the efficiency of muscles. One of the problems with being able to do this is that as we start to grow older and tense ourselves in reaction to life’s worries and concerns, our posture deteriorates, often quite seriously.
There are many disciplines that work with the structural alignment of your body. Some of these include chiropractic, osteopathy, yoga, Alexander technique, tai chi, cranio-sacral therapy, physical therapy, Feldenkrais method and Rolfing – they can all help to correct structural alignment. There are differences in the way various disciplines view influence between bodily structure and function, however they all work to correct structural or postural problems so that the body is able to work at its best.
In the following section I provide a brief outline of the approach to structural alignment from the perspectives of chiropractic, osteopathy, Alexander technique, yoga and cranio-sacral therapy.
Chiropractic considers that spinal subluxations impinge on structures, such as nerves, blood vessels and lymphatics, passing through spinal column resulting is disease. ‘Adjustment’ of a subluxated vertebra removes the problem – thus allowing normal ‘flow’ to the diseased parts.
Osteopathy is concerned with the affect structural and mechanical faults will have on physiological processes. They are interested in the impaired mobility in intervertebral joints and work to restore proper mobility – this can be done by working on soft tissue and connective tissue structures rather than actual spinal manipulation used by chiropractors.
The Alexander technique is another way of looking at the body posture. It is a method that works to change movement patterns or habits in our everyday activities. It works to improving the ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a re-education of the mind and body and a releasing of unnecessary body tension. It can be applied to sitting, lying down, standing, walking, lifting, and other daily activities.
There are many forms of yoga but they all aim to use postures to improve body functioning. Yoga has an overall tonic effect for the entire body as it strengthens the spine, upper back, arms, shoulders, wrists, buttocks, thighs and abdomen. It also stretches the chest and the lungs and spine. It stimulates the cardiovascular system, thyroid and pituitary glands. These measures mean that yoga facilitates the development of a good posture with flexibility and strength.
Cranio-sacral therapy considers postural alignment to be dependent on a free and open connective tissue system throughout the body. Connective tissue surrounds and supports all of the structures of our body and when it is restricted it can cause tension on these structures which can result in postural malalignment. The connective tissue restrictions can be caused by trauma – physical and emotional, or by habitual body patterns due to stress. Cranio-sacral therapy helps in releasing these connective tissue restrictions, freeing the trauma or holding patterns and therefore allowing for free movement.
Each of these approach and others that are similar, work on establishing a harmonious alignment in the structure and therefore also the function of the body. They all have different approaches and techniques – with the common theme of working to improve posture and wellbeing.
If you have a problem with your posture you will experience pain and dysfunction of various joints and muscles. There will also be a corresponding reduction in the function of any underlying organs – such as the lungs or the digestive system and so forth. A well aligned bony structure is an important consideration when you want to improve your overall health and wellbeing. I recommend finding a reputable practitioner of one of the therapies outlined above having any structural problems corrected.
Common Dog Health Problems
01.23
It’s unfortunate, but our four-legged friends can have the same health issues we do. Common dog health problems include skin issues and allergies, diabetes, arthritis, and even cancer. Dogs also get diseases due to viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Here is a look at some of the most common canine health issues.
Dog Skin Problems and Allergies
Dogs can be allergic to house dust and dust mites, ragweed, molds, pollens, fleas, dog food ingredients, and other common allergens. Allergies may be seasonal or your pet may suffer all year round. Common symptoms of canine allergies include your dog licking his paws excessively, scratching his body, or pawing at his ears. In some severe cases, you dog may have oozing hot spots on his body.
Avoiding allergens should be the first step in treating your dog’s allergies. If you dog is allergic to dust mites, vets suggest using a plastic cover over your pet’s bed and be sure to vacuum your house often. If you suspect food allergies, try changing your dog’s diet to eliminate common allergens such as corn and soy. If your dog has ragweed and pollen allergies, keep him out of fields and tall grasses. Cut your lawn frequently and keep your dog indoors during days with high pollen counts. If your dog has severe reactions to flea bites, talk to your vet about the best flea prevention medication.
Mild allergies are usually treated with soothing shampoos liked oatmeal shampoo and/or essential fatty acids to help stop itching and keep skin from getting dry. Hydrocortisone spray or shampoo may also help to relieve itching. Check with your vet for other recommendations, especially if your dog has severe symptoms.
Arthritis in Dogs
Arthritis is very common in dogs, especially older ones, and can affect large breeds and small. Symptoms may range from mild to moderate or severe and there may be joint cartilage damage. If you dog has difficulty in getting up; limps, particularly after exercise; walks slower than normal or has a change in gait; has difficulty in jumping or climbing stairs; or a hard time squatting to do his business, he may have arthritis. It is best to see your vet to get a proper diagnosis in case there is another underlying issue such as cancer or hip dysplasia.
Your vet may prescribe one or more anti-inflammatory medications or pain relievers. You can also get special non-prescription canine aspirin for dogs to help relieve joint pain and inflammation. Some dog owners have found that supplements with glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and essential fatty acids have helped reduce their dog’s discomfort and improved their mobility.
Tip: If your dog is overweight, help him lose weight with low impact exercise like leash walks and swimming and a reduced caloric intake. This will reduce the stress on his joints.
Dog Heartworm Symptoms and Prevention
Heartworm disease is one of the most preventable canine diseases. Heartworm disease is caused by infected mosquitoes biting your dog and depositing microscopic larvae, which mature, migrate to your pet’s heart and reproduce. When they grow into adult worms, they can be up to a foot long. If left untreated, dogs will usually die of heart failure. Heartworm symptoms include tiredness, decreased appetite, weight loss, and heart failure. Sadly, symptoms often don’t show up until about a year after infection when it may be too late. Preventing this nasty disease is simple. Your vet will normally perform a heartworm test as part of your dog’s yearly checkup and prescribe a once-a-month tablet or a topical treatment that will prevent heartworm infestation.
Canine Kennel Cough
Kennel cough is a very contagious respiratory infection. Symptoms include a persistent, dry hacking cough and sometimes a foamy mucus may develop. Most commonly it is caused by a bacterial infection called Bordetella bronchiseptica. It is often referred to as “kennel cough” because the bacteria is easily passed among dogs in close quarters such as at boarding kennels, dog park, dog shows and pet hospitals. Dogs may have short term immunity after an infection but then get it again 6-12 months later. You can have your dog vaccinated for kennel cough (Bordetella), which is usually administered as a nasal drop. If you frequently board your dog or take him to dog parks, vets usually recommend that your dog be vaccinated twice a year. If your dog has a mild case of kennel cough, no treatment may be needed. In severe cases it can be treated with antibiotics.
If you think your dog has a health problem, see your veterinarian so you can get a proper diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
