Insomnia and Sleep Apnea

Sleeping is essential to how you function during the day. If you are not getting enough sleep during the night, it will show during the day. You may feel tired while at work or especially while driving, which is dangerous.

In addition to not getting enough sleep, you may also have problems while you are asleep. It is not uncommon to have sleep apnea in addition to insomnia. Sleep apnea is a nightly issue where you may stop breathing for short periods of time during sleep.

With the combination of not being able to fall asleep until early hours and on top of that, having breathing problems when you finally do, it is very hard to push yourself through the day without wanting to collapse into a coma!

For adults, insomnia is common and can be helped. Usually it is brought on by busy lifestyles that fight against unwinding when night comes, stress from work and kids, and too much caffeine.

Sleep apnea can be caused by being overweight, tonsil and adeniod problems, and problems with mucus in the nose and throat.

As far as remedies to get rid of these problems, there are a few that may help kill two birds with one stone. Eating healthier and exercising is one. Another is staying away from caffeine and drinks that may enhance the amount of phlegm in the throat, and eliminating stress in your lifestyle. Easier said than done, but it is very possible, and definitely works if you are desperate.

Sleep is very important, so make sure to take care of your body when you are awake and while you are sleeping!

Sleeplessness and trouble sleeping are not just inconveniences and they certainly are not health problems to be taken lightly!

There have been many instance of death directly related to sleep apnea and falling alseep while driving is only one way that death can arise. Many patients who die in their sleep from heart malfunctions are the sufferers of sleep apnea.

The constant stress of sleeplessness and the tendency of falling asleep at inappropriate places and inappropriate times is so strong that chronic depression is often experienced. This can result in the loss of employment and sometimes the family.

When is it inappropriate to fall asleep?

When you are visiting a friend’s house and you fall asleep while holding a cup of coffee. Coffee spills all over you which does not matter but also over friend’s new white carpet.

While interviewing a client and you realize she is looking strangely at you and you do not remember the last few seconds. That is inappropriate!

I have suffered from sleep apnea for forty years although I did not know what it was. My Dad had insomnia so I thought it only natural that I should suffer from it too. In my early years it wasn’t so bad and I put up with it. It did not stop me from achieving any of the goals I had set.

I certainly did not think it was such a problem I needed to see a Doctor for it. That would be a bit spooky!

When things progressed to the stage that I could not operate a computer without falling asleep every minute and jerking myself awake, my wife insisted I do something.

The crunch came when she found me with my face on the keyboard and I did not seem to be breathing. She thought I was dead. No just dead asleep.!

Why am I talking about falling asleep and insomnia at the same time? Because they go together. I would apparently lay awake all night and have a compulsion to fall asleep during the day.

I lost my business, most of my money, and very nearly my wife!

Yet for sufferers of sleep apnea and insomnia there are various treatments that work or, at least, alleviate the problem. Women sometimes suffer from it but the majority of sufferers are men.

Men – stop trying to be macho! Get treatment before it is too late!

How To Know If You Really Do Have Insomnia

Are you having sleepless nights? Do you suspect that you are suffering from insomnia? Are you looking for a cure for what you think might be insomnia? Since you can’t cure what you don’t have, before searching for and trying a cure, it might be a good idea to confirm that you actually do have insomnia. Here is how you can know whether or not you actually do have insomnia.

If you regularly go to bed and then lie awake for several hours before finally falling asleep, it’s possible that you have insomnia. If you have no problem falling asleep but regularly wake up after a few hours and then are unable to go back to sleep, you might be suffering from insomnia.

If you are a restless sleeper and wake up feeling as though you haven’t slept at all, again it is possible that you are suffering from insomnia. You need to be careful with the last symptom because it is also possible that you have sleep apnea and not insomnia. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that, left untreated, can actually kill you. Therefore, it is vital that you get checked out for sleep apnea before concluding that you are suffering from insomnia.

Lack of sleep does not mean that you are an insomniac. There are many people who do not sleep very much but awaken after a few hours of sleep full of energy and ready for a full day of work. If that is you, then you don’t have insomnia, you just don’t need as much sleep as you think you do.

On the other hand, if you wake up feeling tired, fuzzy-headed, lacking energy, and are unable to get much accomplished in a day because your thought processes are too slow and because you always feel sleepy, it is very possible that you do, indeed, have insomnia.

If you really are an insomniac, realizing it is just the first step on your road to treating your insomnia. Your next step should be to figure out what is causing it. Once you’ve pinpointed the cause, finding and implementing a natural cure for insomnia to effectively treat yours will not be far behind.
